Qatar Navigation Receives the First of Four
Container Vessels from Korean Ship Building Company
 
Doha/Pusan 5 June 2009, Qatar Navigation (QSC) announced today that it has received the first of four Container vessels made especially for the Company in South Korea. The new ship will be named           “Al Yasra”. It will carry the Qatari flag.
H.E. Sheikh Ali Bin Jassem Al Thani, Chairman of Qatar Navigation & Managing Director headed the Qatari delegation to Korea and received Al Yasra on behalf of the Qatari Company from Mr. J.Y.AHN Managing Director of the Korean based Company Dae Sun shipbuilding and Engineering Co. Ltd./Pusan- Korea. Top executives from Qatar Navigation, Dae Sun and Lloyds Shipping attended the ceremony held at the Company’s shipyard in Pusan.
In a speech at the ceremony, H.E. Sheikh Ali Bin Jassem Al Thani expressed his appreciation to the Korean Company represented by Mr. J.Y.AHN the Managing Director. He praised the professionalism and dedication of both the Korean team that worked on building the vessel and their counterparts in Qatar Navigation who facilitated all the requirements to have the vessel being built on time with the latest shipping technology and within the budget.
“This is a landmark achievement for Qatar Navigation,” H.E. The Chairman of Qatar Navigation said. “It will be followed by other achievements. Qatar Navigation will receive three other vessels from Dae Sun our partners in this business for a long time. We will be receiving them gradually during the coming months with the last vessel to be received before the end of 2009 thus raising the Company’s shipping capacity from 2810 to 7210 containers.”
Equipped with the latest shipping technology, Al Yasra is 144.5 meters long and 22.6 meters wide with more than 11 meters in depth. It is capable of carrying more than 1,000 containers equivalent to 12,400 ton dead weight.
The trip between Pusan to Doha will take around 25 days. After arriving in Doha, the vessel will be operating in the Gulf Region and mainly transporting cargo between Qatar and the United Arab Emirates on feeder service.
H.E. Sheikh Ali Bin Jassem Al Thani affirmed that Qatar Navigation will go forward in its plans to expand and do whatever is necessary to preserve its place in the shipping industry through adding new vessels to the Company’s fleet, and investing where the Company sees feasible to preserve the shareholders interests in the Company and achieve the objectives we set for ourselves.
The three other vessels were given Qatari names. They are “Al Bidda”, “Al Romeilla”, and “Osheirej”.
